considered FTIC.) Some findings of this exercise include
the following:
- VC

First-Time-In-College students at 10 south Texas Community
Colleges and Universities portrays the average age of FTIC
students decreasing from 21.3 in Fall 1994 to 20.4 in Fall
1998. The average age of VC FTIC students was 21.7 in Fall
1994 and 20.0 in Fall 1998.
- 60% of south Texas
Fall 1998 First-Time-In-College (FTIC)students are enrolled in
developmental education courses. A local study comparing the
percent of Fall 1998 FTIC students attending developmental
courses at 8 south Texas Community Colleges and Universities
resulted in Texas A&M International University with the lowest
at 25%, Texas Southmost College with the highest at 78%,
while VC had 39% of its FTIC students attending DE courses.
- Hispanics make up
the majority of First-Time-In-College (FTIC)students in south
Texas Community Colleges and Universities. A local study
comparing the ethnic proportions of FTIC students at 10
institutions illustrates the overall proportion of Hispanics
increasing from 61% in Fall 1994 to 68% in Fall 1998. In Fall

FTIC Hispanic students with 97% and VC had the lowest with
